Prime Minister John Briceno sharply criticized what he described as the negative tone of recent media coverage during an exchange with reporters today, saying that some outlets have focused more on criticism than on balance and context in reporting on his administration. As the Prime Minister was in the middle of addressing the issue, one reporter interrupted his remarks to ask about his recent meeting with labour unions, prompting Briceno to shift from his criticism of the media to provide an update on that engagement. In response, the Prime Minister described the meeting with union representatives as constructive, noting that while disagreements remain, both sides reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue. He explained that the parties agreed to quarterly meetings in 2026 to maintain open communication and collaboration on issues affecting workers and the wider economy.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Sometimes you all are so negative you. You all all you look is for negative things but there’s a lot f good things happening in this country. If you go around you will see. Look at what our town councils and our municipal bodies have been doing, fixing up their parks for that Christmas spirit. We had a good meeting with the unions, yes we did and listen they do their work, we do our work and of course it’s not easy because both of us look from different sides but at the end of the day we could come to an agreement and I do believe that they are acting in good faith just like us. There is so much that is happening in this country. Let us be positive about what’s going on, that’s what we need to do.”
The exchange comes amid heightened criticism of the Prime Minister from several media outlets in recent weeks, as the government faces scrutiny on multiple fronts.
