PM Briceño Responds to Deputy Prime Minister Hyde’s Call for More Poverty Relief

In last week’s interview, Cordel Hyde also spoke on the cost of living suggesting that the government needs to do more by way of poverty alleviation.  PM Briceno responded to those comments, saying he will have to go back to Cabinet to see what else can be done at this juncture.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Well the PUP is always a party of renewal, of soul searching. As I had mentioned in the state of the nation how much work we have done for the people of this country. How much work we have done in trying to address the issues of the cost of living ? Because something that we understand and we discuss every single day, and he’s in cabinet and he has supported all of these initiatives that we’ve done and I can understand where he comes from. You know Cordel represents one of among the poorest constituencies in the area. One of the areas where we have a lot of social problems. So I could understand him saying that and so when we get into Cabinet we’re going to discuss it and what more we can do, what else can be done, how can we continue renewing and innovating and energize the party. But one thing that does not change in the People’s United Party we are a party that is based on social justice. The minute we lose that then we cannot be a member of the People’s United Party.”
