PM Briceño, US Deputy Secretary Discuss Security and Economic Cooperation

Prime Minister John Briceño met with United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in Washington, D.C., yesterday for discussions on security, economic cooperation and bilateral relations.  According to the US Department of State, both officials expressed appreciation for the existing cooperation between Belize and the United States on issues affecting the national security and economic interests of both countries. The talks included opportunities to advance the bilateral partnership through Belize’s compact with the Millennium Challenge Corporation of US$125 million agreement intended to support projects in Belize’s education and energy sectors.  Prime Minister Briceño and Deputy Secretary Landau also discussed security cooperation against narco-trafficking and illegal migration, as well as efforts to strengthen trade and commercial ties.  The US statement did not provide details on any new commitments, agreements or timelines resulting from the meeting. However, the discussions reaffirmed the two countries’ intention to continue cooperating on shared security and economic priorities.
