PM Meets Sugar Industry Stakeholders as Mealybug Threat Grows

Prime Minister John Briceño met today with stakeholders in the sugar industry to discuss the ongoing mealybug infestation and receive updates on initiatives aimed at strengthening the sector. The discussions included the Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture Project, known as CRESAP, and the Building the Adaptive Capacity of Sugarcane Farmers in Northern Belize Project, or BAC-SuF.  The meeting examined the threat the mealybug infestation poses to sugarcane production and the measures being taken to support affected farmers. Stakeholders also reviewed the progress of programmes designed to make the industry more resilient to pests, extreme weather and the wider effects of climate change.  The BAC-SuF Project is financed by the Green Climate Fund and implemented by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, commonly known as the 5Cs.
