Prime Minister John Briceño says government is optimistic about the advancement and future expansion of the Port of Belize. Speaking in an interview last week, the Prime Minister reflected on the troubled history of the port, noting that for decades the operation shifted from being a public asset to private ownership before eventually falling into receivership. Briceño explained that before government moved ahead with the acquisition process, extensive consultations were held with stakeholders to determine the best path forward for the port and its long-term viability.
According to the PM, the government now sees significant opportunities for growth in the sector and has already begun discussions with major cruise lines and other potential investors as part of broader plans to modernize and expand port operations. According to Briceño, those talks are aimed at strengthening Belize’s position within the regional cruise and shipping industry while creating new economic opportunities tied to tourism and maritime commerce.
Since reacquiring the port, government has stated that its objective is to modernize and expand the facility, improve cruise and cargo operations.
