Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says ignorance among some members of society is a real threat to the country’s democracy.

He made the assertion while addressing the Jamaica Labour Party’s constituency conference in East Central St. Catherine on Sunday.

Mahiri Stewart reports.

Speaking to hundreds of Labourites on Sunday, Prime Minister Holness reasoned that a lack of knowledge among the population was a major hindrance to the nation’s democracy.

He referenced a TikTok video in which the creator was casting doubt on information about the stability of the Jamaican dollar.

He accused the opposition People’s National Party of pushing falsehoods in an attempt to mislead the public. According to Dr. Holness, misinformation that plays on the ignorance of some Jamaicans is a hurdle to progress.

Meanwhile, the prime minister addressed comments by mayor of Mandeville, Donovan Mitchell, in relation to the government’s plan to build a recreational park in Manchester.

Mayor Mitchell says focus should instead be placed on renovating the Mandeville Market. Dr. Holness cited this as an example of political expediency.
