The People’s National Movement (PNM) Tobago Council has completed its screening process and selected 15 candidates to contest the upcoming Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections.
The process began in June and involved 35 individuals offering themselves for service across the island’s 15 electoral districts. The final screening session took place earlier this week.
In a press release issued on July 31, the party said the candidates were chosen after what it described as a “rigorous and participatory process.” It said the final slate represents a dynamic blend of youth and experience, comprising people of diverse backgrounds and a proven record of service to Tobago and the wider country.
“These are leaders who have already made their mark in their communities and are now stepping forward to offer Tobago a bold, competent and people-centred alternative,” the release stated.
The party also thanked all who participated in the process, including the 35 nominees and the party groups that helped facilitate the screenings. It said democracy within the PNM remains vibrant, and the process reflects the depth of leadership within the party’s ranks.
Although the names of the selected candidates have not yet been released, the PNM said they will be announced in due course.
With elections expected following the expiration of this term on December 6, the party said it is ready to serve Tobago again and is prepared to answer the call of the people whenever required.
The Progressive Democratic Patriots ended the PNM’s 21-year reign in the 2021 election with a 14–1 win.
In less than a year, a public spat between PDP leader Watson Duke and Chief Secretary Farley Augustine triggered a mass resignation of 13 assemblymen. Duke was left alone with his party.
The 13 assemblymen went on to form the Tobago People’s Party in 2023.
The PNM screening exercise was led by political leader Ancil Dennis, who previously said the party intended to finalise candidates for all districts by the end of July.
