The opposition People’s National Party, PNP, says it’s deeply concerned over the continued delays by the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, to finalise arrangements for the upcoming national debates.
According to the PNP those debates are set to begin next week.
In a statement on Thursday, the PNP says despite repeated confirmations, the JLP has missed two critical planning meetings with the Jamaica Debates Commission, including one rescheduled for 2 pm on Thursday afternoon.
The PNP says the meeting was scheduled based on the JLP’s request. The PNP says its debate coordinator was present and ready to proceed, but no JLP representative attended.
The party says when contacted, the JLP’s designated negotiator, Delroy Williams, indicated he was in May Pen and unavailable, despite having confirmed the meeting in advance.
The PNP says the delays are unacceptable.
It says the debates are a vital part of Jamaica’s democratic process, giving citizens an opportunity to hear from all parties on issues that matter most.
It’s calling on the JLP to stop the political gamesmanship, respect the commission’s schedule and commit in good faith to completing the debate arrangements without further delay.
In the meantime, chairman of the JLP’s communication task force, Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, says there is no truth to the suggestion from PNP general secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell, that the governing party is seeking to delay the debate preparation process.
Senator Fitz-Henley says the statement from Dr. Campbell is a typical attempt at cheap political points.
