PNP Promises Affordable Rates to Regularise Squatters Living on State Lands

The PNP says when it forms the next government, it will allow individuals and families who have lived for decades on government-owned lands the opportunity to purchase them at affordable rates.

This plan was put forward by Member of Parliament for South West Clarendon, Lothan Cousins, as part of his Sectoral Debate presentation on Tuesday.

Cousins says this is part of the PNP’s clear and people-focused plan to unlock government lands and build an ownership society grounded in fairness, dignity, and economic justice.

He emphasised that the approach will not be one-size-fits-all but will involve consultation, flexibility, and, where necessary, relocation to ensure sustainability and safety.

The plan also includes a major affordability measure, with the cost of land being excluded from NHT housing prices.

He says this will result in savings to the individual of two to three million dollars.

Cousins also called attention to the need to modernise the Registration of Titles Act, ROTA.

The Act currently requires 60 years of continuous occupation to claim Crown land.

He’s proposing this be adjusted to only 25 years.
