PNP’s Dr Miranda Wellington Denounces Political Violence After ‘Prepare for War’ Backlash

“I do not support political violence!” That’s the word from People’s National Party, PNP, caretaker for South West St. Elizabeth, Dr. Miranda Wellington.

Dr. Wellington took to social media on Thursday, amid an avalanche of criticism over her incendiary remarks on the campaign trial in Westmoreland on the weekend.

Dr. Wellington told comrades at a PNP meeting in Frome that, “this is not going to be an easy victory, but I want you to know that we are prepared for war, and if a war, a war.”

The PNP has jumped to her defence, criticising the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, for amplifying the backlash she’s facing.

In a statement, PNP general secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell, says her remarks have been deliberately misrepresented by the JLP in a cynical effort to derail her momentum and distract from its own long-standing pattern of aggression.

He says Dr. Wellington’s remarks were reflective of the pressures faced by women in politics.

Dr. Wellington says her comments were motivated by a deep seated passion for people.

And Dr. Wellington doubled down on the comments she made in Westmoreland on Sunday, saying her remarks about war are grounded in the tough reality of a political campaign.
