Public commentator, Germaine Barrett says the PNP’s manifesto proposal to expand membership of the Senate could be problematic.

He was speaking on Nationwide This Morning on Thursday.

Colliecia Wright reports.

Under its ‘Justice for All’ pillar, the PNP proposes to expand the Senate to broaden representation.

It proposes giving Senate seats to persons in the diaspora, persons with disabilities, and those in the Rastafari and Maroon communities.

Barrett says mandating seats for specific groups could lead to fragmentation along ethnic lines.

Cementing his point, Barrett used the Accompong Maroons as example.

Maroon Chief Richard Currie, has strongly maintained that the group has sovereign right over the Cockpit Country and the maroon village.

Barrett says the group’s position is discordant with the PNP’s proposal.

Meanwhile, Barrett says there’s nothing stopping an administration from being more inclusive in its Senate appointments.
