PNP Vows to Reform Education Amid ‘National Literacy Crisis’

1 day ago 1

The opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is vowing to reform the education sector amidst what it says is a national literacy crisis.

The PNP is reacting to news that over 70 per cent of grade seven students at Pembroke Hall High School are unable to read or are reading at or below the grade three level.

Deputy Spokesperson on Education, member of parliament aspirant for South East St Ann, Dr. Kenneth Russell, calls it a national disgrace and a failure of the Holness administration.

Dr. Russell say the PNP is committed to reforming early childhood education as the current system is not working.

Meanwhile, Dr. Russell says 2024 PEP results which show that 67 per cent of students are proficient or highly proficient in Language Arts, paints a misleading picture.

He adds that the CSEC results also highlight the disconnect between the test data and the students’ functioning realities.
