Podium finishes for Distin, McLeod, Stona in Holland

HIGH JUMPER Lamara Distin and Omar McLeod were the best-placed Jamaicans at yesterday’s FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands, a World Athletics Continental Gold meet, finishing second in their respective events. Roje Stona also delivered a strong performance, finishing third in the men’s discus.

Competing in her second overseas meet this season, Olympian Distin secured second place in the women’s high jump. The Commonwealth Games champion cleared 1.90 metres. World Indoor champion and back-to-back Olympic Games silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers of Australia won the event with a clearance of 1.97, while Engla Nilssen of Sweden was third with 1.85.

Sprint hurdler McLeod also claimed a second-place finish after clocking 13.45 seconds in the men’s 110-metre hurdles. World leader Cordell Tinch of the United States won in 13.10, while Michael Obasuyi of Belgium took third in 13.45.

Olympic Games gold medallist Stona closed out the top three in the men’s discus with a throw of 67.19 metres. The event was won by Kristjan Čeh of Slovenia with 69.21, while Matthew Denny of Australia took second with 67.64. Jamaica’s Federick Dacres was seventh with a mark of 63.86.

The other Jamaican competing at the meet, Carey McLeod, managed a seventh-place finish in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.73 metres. Gerson Balde of Portugal won the event with 8.07.

World 400-metre hurdles champion Femke Bol of the Netherlands won her second race of the season in fine style, capturing the women’s 400-metre hurdles in an impressive 52.51 seconds.
