The ugly side of the beautiful game grabbed centrestage in the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Trinidad Group on Sunday, when the encounter between hosts Point Pioneers and the visiting Trendsetter Hawks ended in a mass brawl at Mahaica Sporting Complex in Point Fortin.
Trendsetter Hawks was well in control of the contest, leading 5-0 just past the 70th-minute mark, when the match referee issued red cards to a player from each team.
While they were exiting the field, it is alleged that the red-carded player from Trendsetters attacked the disciplined player from Pioneers. This triggered a chain reaction, with players from both teams becoming involved in a mass brawl. In the end, a Point Pioneers player received a cut above her eye and was taken to the Point Fortin Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Reached for comment, Point Pioneers coach Rennie Blackman said it was very unfortunate that the match ended the way it did, and with a player being taken to the hospital.
Blackman added, “I spoke with my players and they have accused the Trendsetter Hawks players of threatening them throughout the match, two players in particular, and they reported it to the match officials, who refused to take action.”
The Point Pioneers coach was also dismayed by the actions of the match officials. He stated that instead of staying around to ensure everything was safe and under control, they opted to leave immediately after blowing off the match. Blackman noted that the club expects to make an official report to T&T WoLF on the matter.
Contacted for comment, Anthony “Dada” Wickham, the long-serving coach of Trendsetter Hawks, said he wasn’t in a position to comment on the incident yet as he first has to file his own report to WoLF. Meanwhile, WoLF Competition Secretary Lystra Lara was also reached for comment but stated she was still awaiting official match reports from both teams.
Elsewhere in matches that were actually completed, Sheneil Findley and Makaela Yearwood both scored second-half items as the University of T&T (UTT) handed Athletic Club Port-of-Spain (AC PoS) their first loss of the season. The 2-0 victory propelled UTT to the top of the standings.
After a goalless first half at the Phase II Recreation Ground in La Horquetta, Findley fired UTT ahead in the 61st minute. Seven minutes later, Yearwood doubled the scoreline, after which the team held firm to secure the win. The three points moved UTT to the top of the table with 34 points from 15 matches, one ahead of AC PoS, who still have a match in hand. Defending champions Club Sando sits in third spot with 29 points from 14 matches.
At the Ken Cooke Ground at the St James Police Barracks, Police FC got goals from Anushka Villareal (44th), Sheneil Henry (51st), Shakeema Forestine (63rd), and Hannah Vieira (82nd) to defeat Athletic International Academy (AIA) 4-1. Mariah Matthew scored the lone consolation item for AIA in the 40th minute.
Over in Tobago, Jewels SC got second-half goals from Ty’Kaiya Dennis (56th) and Crystal Toney (70th) to beat Black Panthers 2-0 in the opening match of a double-header at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet. The win kept Jewels SC atop the four-team standings with 32 points from 13 matches, six more than Tobago Chicas, who outclassed Combined Ballerz 4-1 in the second match at Bacolet.
Gloria Henry fired in a hat-trick for Tobago Chicas in the seventh, 30th, and 89th minutes, with Neicha Hercules adding the other in the 44the. Combined Ballerz got their lone reply from Akeisha James in the 14th.
