Police and Coast Guard Teach Lifesaving Swim Skills to 50 Children

Fifty children are spending part of their summer learning potentially lifesaving skills through the Annual Swimming Program organized by the Community-Oriented Policing Unit of Eastern Division.  The one-week programme was officially launched on Monday in collaboration with the Belize Coast Guard. It brings together children between the ages of four and sixteen for structured swimming lessons led by trained instructors. Throughout the week, participants are learning basic and advanced swimming techniques, water-safety practices and lifesaving skills. The programme is also designed to build confidence in the water, promote physical fitness and encourage teamwork and discipline.  Organizers say the initiative provides children with a safe and enjoyable activity during the summer break while equipping them with skills that could prove invaluable in a country surrounded by rivers, lagoons and the Caribbean Sea.  The Belize Police Department and the Belize Coast Guard say the programme forms part of their continued investment in young people through positive community engagement.
