Police Constable escapes gunshot injuries after assailant’s gun malfunctioned

Police Constable Joshua Guzman is fortunate to be unharmed following a tense confrontation with an armed suspect late last night in Belize City.  According to reports, a dark-skinned male person pointed a firearm at Guzman, pulled the trigger, but the weapon malfunctioned, and the assailant ran away.  Shortly after, however, he was captured by a different cop who was responding to shots fired in the same vicinity.  Reports indicate that just after ten thirty, police were conducting a routine vehicle search at the corner of Vernon Street and West Collet Canal when they heard two gunshots coming from the nearby Conch Shell Bay Market area. Officers immediately mobilized to investigate.  While approaching the area, one police constable observed a male person running from the direction of the market. In response, PC Malachi Williams exited the patrol vehicle and pursued the individual on foot. During the chase, Williams collided with a dark-skinned male wearing a black ski mask, black T-shirt, black jersey shorts, and no footwear.  It turned out that this person was the man who had pointed a gun at PC Guzman. He was detained, and charges are expected to be levied shortly.
