Police say investigations into the double murder of two teenagers in the Port Loyola area remain active, with authorities continuing to pursue key leads in the case. At today’s police press briefing, Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith provided an update on the killings of 17-year-old Alwin Marin Junior and 18-year-old Jahleil Westby, whose bodies were discovered days apart in the Dyke area earlier this month. The case, which has shocked the community, escalated into a double murder investigation after Marin’s decomposing body was found in dense bushes on April 16, not far from where Westby had been discovered with fatal gunshot injuries days earlier. ASP Smith explained that investigators are continuing to follow several lines of inquiry, including information gathered from earlier detentions and interviews, as well as forensic analysis that is expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding both deaths.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “Certainly that investigation from the initial incident as it relates to the discovery of Mr. Westby the officers have been investigating the matter. A number of video footage were reviewed from those that were available however they did not provide anything substantial. I spoke with the supervisor of the investigating officer and she has advised me that they are in the process of retrieving another number of video footage and those will be reviewed to see how they assist with the investigation. I do know that a number of statements have been recorded because the suggestion is that there was a long standing dispute in that area involving the deceased person and other youths that reside in that area. But the investigation is ongoing and as more results are made the media will be advised.”
Police have previously indicated that the investigation has been challenging due to the vast, heavily vegetated terrain of the area and the lack of surveillance.
