Police Crack Down After Belize City Murder of Tyrone Meighan

Police have rolled out several operations to curb violence in Belize City after a high-profile murder on Friday morning. Thirty-one-year-old Tyrone Meighan was sitting inside a vehicle on Sarstoon Street just after eleven o’clock when two men drove up on a motorcycle with one of them unleashing a barrage of bullets. Meighan was hit several times and died on the scene. This latest homicide occurred a stone’s throw away from the area where Evadne and Luke Jones were killed on Friday, July 4. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says that police are looking into whether the two incidents are linked.

Hilberto Romero, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “Police responded to a shooting incident on Sarstoon Street in Belize City. Upon arrival they found the body of Tyrone Meighan with multiple gunshot injuries. Information is that he was in a vehicle along with another male person when a motorcycle with two persons came to the area. One of the persons fired several shots towards his direction, causing his fatal injuries. We are seeking two persons in regards to this murder investigation. We have several theories. We know this one is gang related with Tyrone Meighan and we are trying to put the pieces together but we cannot conclude that they are related. He was there  looking for someone along with the other male person in the area. I’m not sure who they were looking for but the vehicle was stationary and that is when the motorcycle came to the area. We have seen all these incidents involving motorcycles so we have several operations that are done weekly to try and find these persons who are committing these crimes. We have checkpoints and we also have operations that target persons on motorcycles.”

Tyrone Meighan and his brothers are no strangers to the news. Our news archives show that Tyrone was one of three men charged with the 2012 murder of James Norales, but he was acquitted after spending three years on remand. In October 2023, Tyrone and Ellis Meighan were acquitted of a charge of gang affiliation in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
