Police Deny Reports of Security Detail for Former Minister José Mai

Reports suggesting that former Cabinet Minister and Orange Walk South Area Representative José Abelardo Mai was placed under police protection due to alleged threats on his life have been officially denied. About one week ago, Love News received information claiming that Mai had been assigned a security detail following online allegations linking him to criminal cartels. The claims circulated widely, raising questions about his personal safety and potential police involvement.  Love News sought clarification from Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado, who confirmed that the reports were false and stated that no security detail had been assigned to Mai. The Commissioner indicated that there has been no official action taken to provide protection to the former minister, dismissing the claims as unfounded.

Mai too has denied the reports, saying that he has never had a security detail and does not believe such a measure is necessary. He added that he does not see himself accepting or “tolerating” a personal security assignment, reiterating that he continues to live and work normally within his constituency.

Mai served as Minister of Food Security, Agriculture and Enterprise from November 2020 to November 2025. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 as the Area Representative for Orange Walk South, a seat he continues to hold.
