Police Department Warn Public About Fake Traffic Ticket Text Scam

The Belize Police Department is warning the public about a fraudulent traffic-violation notice being circulated through text messages and online platforms.  The message claims that the recipient was caught speeding by an automated enforcement system and directs the person to a website to view the alleged violation and pay a fine. The linked webpage carries police and government branding and warns that failure to pay could result in additional penalties, suspension of a driver’s licence or legal action.  Police have confirmed that the notice is a scam and was not issued by the Belize Police Department.  Authorities are warning recipients not to respond to the message, click the embedded link, enter a vehicle-registration number or provide any personal or financial information. No payment should be made through the website identified in the message.  The Department explains that cybercriminals often create websites that closely resemble official government platforms to trick unsuspecting users into surrendering sensitive information or making payments.  Anyone who receives a traffic-related notice is advised to verify it through official Government of Belize channels. Suspicious messages and websites should also be reported to the Police Department.  Police say an investigation is underway. The Department is working with the relevant authorities to remove the fraudulent website and identify the persons responsible.  Members of the public are reminded to remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited messages requesting payments or personal information, even when those messages display official-looking logos or appear to contain specific details about an alleged offence.
