Police are investigating the death of a pregnant woman whose body was found inside a room in Belize City yesterday morning. The deceased has been identified as Kimane Rosita Ashanti Garbutt of the Vernon Street and Amandala Drive area. According to police, officers went to the location shortly after nine-thirty. Our newsroom understands that Garbutt had a history of epileptic seizures and was in the third trimester of pregnancy. In today’s police brief, ASP Stacy Smith provided the preliminary information obtained in the investigation.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “Police are investigating the death of 22 year old Kimane Garbutt of Belize City. The investigation commenced on 2nd August, 2026 around 9:30 am when investigators were called to a residence on Vernon Street and the body of Garbutt which had already begun to decompose was discovered. What the investigators have learned is that Garbutt who was with child, was last seen alive at around 7am on 1ST August 2026 at which time she indicated to a friend that she was not feeling well. The friend visited her at around 9am on the 2nd and after calls to her went unanswered he entered the apartment building and made the discovery and subsequently alerted police. The body of Ms.Garbutt now awaits a post mortem examination.”
Reporter: Has police suspected any foul play ?
Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “No foul play is suspected at this time however as I stated a post mortem examination will be conducted.”
According to Police, the victim’s friend, Marvin Moore had gone to check on Garbutt at around nine o’clock. He found the door locked, forced it open and discovered her unresponsive, and contacted the police. Moore reportedly last saw Garbutt alive at around seven o’clock on Saturday morning. At the time, she told him she was not feeling well. She had reportedly visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital about two weeks earlier for a pre-natal check-up after experiencing complications. Her body was taken to the National Forensic Science Service, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to determine the cause of death, and would then direct the police investigation
