Police Launch Holiday Crime-Prevention Outreach in Punta Gorda

With the Christmas season approaching, a period traditionally marked by increased commercial activity and heightened security risks, the Belize Police Department conducted a proactive community outreach initiative in Punta Gorda Town on Thursday, November 27.  Officer Commanding Toledo, Superintendent Brent Hamilton, along with Deputy O.C. of Operations Inspector Tedford Garbutt and officers from the Punta Gorda Police Station, carried out a Meet and Greet Operation targeting local businesses. The visit formed part of the department’s broader holiday safety strategy aimed at preventing crime, improving communication, and strengthening partnerships with the business community.  During the walk-through, police officers met directly with business owners and employees to discuss the importance of vigilance during the busy shopping period. Officers reminded proprietors to adopt practical security measures such as improving lighting, securing entry points, monitoring cash-handling practices, and ensuring surveillance systems are functional.  Business owners were also invited to an upcoming meeting where the police will share additional safety tips, listen to specific concerns, and work jointly to develop localized crime-prevention strategies.  Superintendent Hamilton emphasized that the department remains fully committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for both residents and the business sector. He noted that closer cooperation between police and the community is essential, especially during the holidays when theft, burglary, and opportunistic crime tend to increase.  The Belize Police Department says similar outreach efforts will continue throughout the district in the coming weeks as part of its Christmas Anti-Crime Plan.
