Police officer to face High Court trial over allegations involving minor

A 20-year-old Belize City police officer is preparing to face trial in the High Court after a judge set a date for proceedings in a case involving allegations of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.  Gian Teck appeared this week before Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court of Belize for a Case Management Conference (CMC), where the court scheduled his trial for March 23 at 9:00 a.m.  Teck, who remains out on bail, is accused of having sexual intercourse with a female minor under the age of sixteen. The matter was discussed during the CMC as the court sought to identify the key issues likely to arise during the trial.  The prosecution, represented by Crown Counsel Kirk Brown from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, indicated that its case will rely heavily on the credibility and reliability of the virtual complainant, who is expected to testify along with a medical doctor.  Both the prosecution and defense agreed that the trial will be conducted in camera, meaning it will be closed to the public and media due to the involvement of a minor.  Teck is represented by attorney Javier Williams, who told the court that the defense intends to challenge the allegations and dispute what the prosecution describes as an admission made by the accused. According to Williams, the complainant’s account was manufactured, and he argued that the alleged admission by Teck was made only in an attempt to protect the minor and should not be interpreted as a confession.  Williams indicated that his client intends to contest the charge at trial and has no plans to enter a guilty plea.  The case follows an earlier matter involving Teck that was discontinued earlier this year. On January 28, 2026, a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse involving a 14-year-old complainant was withdrawn after a nolle prosequi was entered before Candace Nanton. The trial in that matter had already begun, but no reason was publicly given for the decision to discontinue the proceedings.  In the present case, Teck is accused of having sexual intercourse with another minor, who was 14 years and 11 months old at the time of the alleged incident.  The High Court is expected to hear the matter when the trial begins later this month.
