Police Officers Complete Intensive Tactical and Wellness Training Program

Police officers attached to various formations across the country have completed an intensive week-long professional law enforcement development course hosted at the National Police Training Academy. The training ran for five days last week, and was focused on strengthening officer preparedness, professionalism, tactical awareness, and personal resilience.  Officers underwent a comprehensive curriculum designed to reinforce institutional core values while addressing operational safety and accountability in the field. One of the central components of the training examined what instructors described as “Deadly Errors” in law enforcement operations. These included losing situational awareness, ignoring warning signs, failing to monitor suspects’ hands, relaxing too early during operations, adopting poor tactical positions, and displaying what was referred to as “tombstone courage.”  The course also placed strong emphasis on human rights principles, reminding officers of the importance of treating all members of the public with dignity, fairness, equality, and respect. Facilitators reinforced accountability, integrity, and service as essential values within modern policing and leadership.  Participants additionally received instruction in stress management and tactical communication techniques aimed at improving calm decision-making under pressure while helping officers de-escalate tense situations and strengthen public trust in law enforcement.  Officer wellness formed another major component of the program, with dedicated sessions focusing on physical health, nutrition, hydration, exercise, sleep hygiene, mental health resilience, and suicide prevention. Organizers say the training encouraged the development of stronger peer-support systems within the police department.  The curriculum also included technical instruction in investigative interviewing and interrogation practices, emphasizing ethical and legally sound procedures that respect individual rights throughout the investigative process.  Training concluded with discussions on spiritual resilience and the role faith can play in helping officers maintain wisdom, patience, humility, and self-control while serving their communities.  Special recognition was extended to the facilitators from Responders Without Borders for conducting the program and donating first aid training equipment to support the continued readiness of the Belize Police Department. The instructional team was led by Tom McGranahan and included Gary Anderson, Chris Green, Ryan Castro, Gabe Maldonado, Michael Skogg, and Jim Williams, along with support team members Ann McGranahan, Olga Dacy, and Lorie Anderson.
