Late this evening, the Police Public Relations Unit provided an update on the murder of Mark Gabourel. According to ASP Stacy Smith, investigators have been reviewing footage in the area.

Stacy Smith, Superintendent of Police: “The ongoing investigation commenced on Wednesday January 7th, 2026 at approximately 4:35pm when officers were alerted to the sounds of shots being fired in the vicinity of Mountain View Boulevard Belmopan City. The officers were further advised that the location of that shooing incident was in the vicinity of a supermarket on that street. On the arrival of police they observed a male person who was later identified to be Mr.Gabourel whose body exhibited gunshot wounds. What the investigation has so far revealed is that Mr.Gabourel was doing delivery at that establishment and upon leaving that premises a motorcycle which was transporting two persons collided into the truck of Mr.Gabourel and thereafter the passenger that was onboard that motorcycle fired three shots one of which struck Mr.Gabourel causing his untimely demise. So far in this investigation police have made some progress, there are persons in detention. The indication so far suggests that the motive in this incident was indeed a robbery. As a part of this investigation footage is being retrieved from all surrounding areas and that footage has been of useful help to the investigation. The individuals who were on the cycle they wore helmets and they were covered with long sleeved clothing when this incident occurred.”
Having similar elements, Love News asked ASP Smith if the investigators have been able to link the December robbery of a Sarita delivery truck on the Hummingbird Highway. We also asked if there was any arrest made when Gabourel was robbed last year in the Tiger Town area in Belmopan when he was out making deliveries.
Stacy Smith, Superintendent of Police: “I have not received any indication so far, however, given that the modus operandi in this incident resembles another incident in terms of the transportation used, the investigators have looked at different incidents in relation to the progress that have been made in this one.”
Reporter: Can you say if the police were able to make an arrest in last year’s robbery. We know that Mr. Gabourel was robbed in the Tigertown Area of Belmopan.
Stacy Smith, Superintendent of Police: “I would have to ask for that information. I’m not in a position to confirm whether or not an arrest was made.”
In the incident of the Sarita truck robbery, Gabourel was one of the persons who found the abandoned truck on the side of the highway. In this case, two men were killed, namely, Raynard Garbutt and Alexander Crawford.
