Police Train to Handle Mental Health Cases Under New Policy Manual

Senior officers of the Belize Police Department are now better equipped to train their subordinates on the department’s revised policy manual for mental health. Over the past four days, the officers participated in a training of trainers session facilitated by the Ministry of Health and Wellness. The trainers were taught to train junior officers on how to interact with people suffering from mental health conditions in the field, as well as caring for their own mental health. ACP Howell Gillett, National Commander, Community Policing, and ASP Jane Usher, Director of Training for the department, spoke on the training aspect of the workshop.

We also spoke with the participants about their takeaways from the sessions.

The training was held in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization and the Indian Law Society.
