Police Youth Cadets Explore Belize’s Industries During Summer Camp

Day three of the Belize Police Youth Cadet Corps National Summer Camp combined education, cultural exposure and camaraderie as participants toured several businesses and attractions in the Stann Creek District. The activities took place yesterday, with Ecumenical High School serving as the camp’s base.  Cadets visited Marie Sharp’s Fine Foods and Citrus Products of Belize Limited, where presentations introduced them to the processes used to manufacture and export some of Belize’s best-known products.  At Sabal’s Cassava Production, the cadets received a closer look at how cassava is harvested and transformed into cassava bread and other finished products. The tour also highlighted the labour, skills and traditions behind one of Belize’s staple foods.  The group later visited a butterfly farm, where a guided tour took them through the different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle and provided an up-close look at the farm’s operations.  Following the educational tours, the cadets returned to camp for an evening campfire. They roasted marshmallows and sausages, exchanged stories and spent time socializing with their peers.  Organizers say the National Summer Camp is designed to build discipline and leadership while giving young people a greater appreciation of Belize’s industries, agriculture and cultural heritage.
