Jevaughn Powell and Delano Kennedy failed in their latest bids to hit the automatic qualifying standard in the men’s 400 metres for the Tokyo World Athletics Championships, despite finishing first and third, respectively, in Europe yesterday.
Competing in their second race in two days, at the Memorial Zbigniewa Ludwiszewskiego meet in Olsztyn, Poland — a World Continental Bronze event — both athletes improved on their placings from the previous day, where they ended second and fourth.
Powell won the event yesterday in a meet record 45.43 seconds ahead of Karol Zalewski of Poland, who was second in 45.66 with Kennedy finishing third in 45.82.
Travis Williams had a third-place finish in the men’s 100m, clocking 10.54 seconds.
Candice McLeod continued to struggle on the European circuit in the women’s 400m, as she had to settle for sixth in 52.98. The event was won by Lada Vondrova of Czechia in a meet record 51.88.
Two Jamaicans, Ryiem Forde and Sean Bailey, were in action at the P-T-S World Continental Silver meet in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, where they experienced mixed fortunes.
Forde finished second in the men’s 100m in 9.98, equalling his season’s best. Ronnie Baker, of the United States, came out on top with a season’s best and meet record 9.92. Shaun Maswanganyi, of South Africa, was third in 10.07.
As he did at the National Senior Championships, former national 400m champion Sean Bailey failed to finish in the men’s 400m, which was won by Eugene Omalla of the Netherlands in 45.28.
