Preliminary Cabinet remix puts Oscar Mira for Home Affairs and New Growth

On Friday, we told you of the issue surrounding the recent Cabinet shuffle announced last Tuesday.  Tonight, we can tell you that Henry Usher will retain his portfolio of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management.  When we left you on Friday, we told you that there were some rumblings within the Briceno Administration as Usher didn’t want the Home Affairs portfolio.  Well, best information says the PM had to mull over the issue this weekend, and with that, Usher retained his portfolio while Oscar Mira takes on Home Affairs and New Growth Industries. It is quite a fully loaded portfolio which Mira says he is more than willing to take on.

Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise: “I think it’s always important to understand that once you are part of cabinet and once the Prime Minister invites you to be a part of cabinet that’s a privilege. It’s a privilege that is not given to anyone. There are 26 of us that are elected in the People’s United Party and being one of those invited by Prime Minister to be part of cabinet for me it’s really an honor for me. I take the assignment very seriously, humbly. And I don’t see it as a move going upwards or downwards or sideways. I just see it as a way of serving my country, of serving the people of Belize, and in extension serving my constituency, Belmopan. I thank the prime minister for having that confidence in me and inviting me to be part of his government. “

The other components of the Cabinet Remix place Florencio Marin Jr. with Border Security and Defence; Kareem Musa to transition to Immigration and Labour; Oscar Requena for Rural Transformation and Local Government, and Francis Fonseca for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, Education, Science, and Technology.
