Jamaica Boxing Association general secretary Leroy Brown said the presence of Pan American Boxing Confederation president Elise Seignolle and the addition of international fighters at the monthly Gloves Over Guns Futures Programme tonight at Stanley Couch Gym in Kingston will be a massive boost for the event.
Seignolle, who is scheduled to be in the island on a five-day tour, will get to see some of the nation’s budding talent against their counterparts from the Cayman Islands and the United Kingdom, and Brown said this would add flavour to the event and motivation to the boxers.
“She (Seignolle) is coming to the event. And it’s a big boost for it. It gives us a little umph to have the Pan Am president here. And we are very enthusiastic about what is happening,” Brown said.
The are 10 amateur fights on the card, six of which will see Jamaican boxers taking on their international counterparts from Cayman and the UK.
“We are having four boxers from the Cayman Islands and two from the UK. So we will have six international fights. These are (international) boxers with not many fights. We have a few of our international boxers on the show to give it a lift. But we are looking for the young talent. Getting the youngsters out and into the action, that is what we want to achieve.
“But of course anytime you have foreigners participating it adds something extra, because you have that Jamaica versus.
“All the foreigners will be against Jamaicans. We did that deliberately because the whole idea is to give our boxers exposure, so they can pick up experiences as they go along,” Brown noted.
However, unlike the previous Gloves over Guns event, which was a pro-am card, tonight’s event will be a solely an amateur event.
“So far it has gone very well. Some months we have pro shows, and bring in professional boxers. Last month is was a pro-am show. So we mix it up with amateurs and pros.
“And a good part of what has been happening is that we get boxers from the schools. There are several schools involved. Ferncourt High, Spot Valley High, Penwood High and St Andrew Technical have bought into the programme and they send boxers to participate, as well,” Brown added.
