Pride and Scorpions Facing Punishment for Refusing to Play Super50 Final

Cricket West Indies has confirmed that Barbados Pride captain Raymon Reifer and Jamaica Scorpions skipper John Campbell will face disciplinary action for their “infringement of the code of conduct” after they refused to turn up for the toss in the rain-affected CG United Super50 Cup day/night final last Saturday.

Cricket West Indies director of cricket Miles Bascombe in expressing his disappointment in the actions of the team captains, says the laws are quite clear.

Reifer and Campbell failed to show for the toss after the match officials made the decision that conditions were safe to play a reduced 20 over match after more than five hours had been lost due to rain.

The game was set to start at 1 pm local time but was delayed for more than five hours due to rain.

The ground staff worked tirelessly to get the facility in a condition that would be deemed safe for play, which led to the match officials informing the captains at 5:43 to report for the toss at 6 pm for a 6:17 start. But, the captains did not show.

Bascombe says the focus will be on the actions of the captains while further investigation will be needed to determine if they acted alone or on the advice of their respective back-room staff.

The captains will now decide if they are going to accept the charges and the penalties proposed or whether they are going to dispute them.

The matter will be heard by the disciplinary committee and will rule on the matter. As a result of the forfeiture neither team will be paid.

Both captains were called to meetings by their respective boards, Reifer on Monday and Campbell on Tuesday.

The JCA is expecting a written report on the matter from Campbell and the coaching staff.
