Jamaican artist Projexx is steadily building a career that he is positive will last for decades to come. In building his catalog, the young entertainer—the son of Lloyd “John John” James and grandson of veteran producer Lloyd “King Jammy” James—will be reeling out some collaborations, including another prospective hit with Afrobeat star Wizkid.
The two had collaborated on True Love which also featured Nigerian singer Tay Iwar. After its October 29, 2020 release, the track went on to sell over 100,000 units in pure sales and audio streaming in the United States.
“That’s really a blessing, you know?” Projexx said of the 2022 milestone in a recent interview with DancehallMag.
“I’ve been working on a lot of collabs recently, to be honest. More on the African side of things. I will say look out for another song with me and Wizkid soon. We did a couple the first time; True Love was just the first one. Look out for another collab with me and Wiz and just a lot more collabs with international acts.”
Projexx was tightlipped about the details of the upcoming Wizkid collaboration but noted that it will be released this year.
The Jamaican-born Miami-based singer signed a deal with Warner Records in 2020. In 2021, he released a seven-song EP titled Queen Hill — featuring songs such as Bigga League with Bakersteez and Unda Pressure with Toian — in tribute to his hometown.
As for collaborating with other Jamaican talents, Projexx said he is 100 percent open and has a few prospects on his list, including Teejay, Masicka, and Tommy Lee Sparta. However, one of Projexx’s biggest goals is to team up with Dancehall superstar Sean Paul, whom he admires.
“Me and Sean Paul are actually in talks of doing some work right now too. I think that’d be really dope because what I’m trying to achieve in music right now, he did it. So, I think that’s going to be something really special when it happens,” he told DancehallMag.
The singer had previously explained that the current state of Dancehall “is a bit dark.” Therefore, he said that whoever he collaborates with will confirm to his beliefs on the respective projects.“We versatile still enuh. But, that’s not the type of music I’d want to do with them. I’d want to bring them on what I’m doing,” Projexx added.
The fast-rising star also encouraged emerging acts to have faith in themselves as they follow their dream.
“I know you guys hear this many times, but, it is true— you have to believe in yourself first. Without that self belief, everything seems impossible. You have to believe in yourself; trust you, and trust God.”
