The Public Service Union is now calling for an audit of the statutory bodies across the country. The demand comes amid the government’s declaration that they are unable to afford the full eight-point five percent salary increase. The union president, Dean Flowers, told Love News that the government needs to seriously look at getting serious about tax collection and streamlining expenses.

Dean Flowers, President, PSU: “I want to advise the government negotiating team, perhaps they might want to look at their economic model to ensure that where tax contribution is concerned we will continue to do our part but the private sector and more importantly these farce foreign investors must now be held accountable to pay their fair share and the fleecing must stop where these statutory bodies are concerned. We want to see an audited financial statement in the next sitting of the House of Representatives for all of these statutory bodies, especially for the last five years. We need to know who we are subsidizing and who we don’t need to subsidize and who could pay into the consolidated revenue fund in accordance with the law. If you look at some of these statutory bodies the abuse is unbelievable. And so, Prime Minister, come clean with the Belizean people, lay on the table the audited financial statements of all these statutory bodies, especially those that are generating millions and millions of dollars in the people’s name.”
