Public officers have been enjoying a slight increase in salaries since October 1 with a four-point five percent raise. This is one of several elements that were presented in the last House Meeting under one of the two Supplementary Appropriation Bills. It is a debate that created some disturbance, particularly when the Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Panton rejected the bill for the supplementals. According to Minister Henry Usher, that rejection could have been interpreted as a rejection of the salary increases.
Meanwhile, President of the Public Service, Dean Flowers, noted that Panton was clear on her reason behind the rejection of the bill. Flowers took it even further by pointing fingers at all past and the present administrations of misusing supplementals in the House.

Dean Flowers, President, PSU: “I think the Leader of the Opposition, the Honorable Panton, was explicitly clear in her comments surrounding the appropriation bill that in the manner and form in which it was presented, which did not in her opinion, expressly separate the different allocations because they were lumped together she said she, I believe she clarified that that is the reason why she did not support. But I think she was explicitly clear as well in her declaration that any, any allowance, raise any consideration to public offices has her full support. It is the very devious manner in which political parties in this country have acted. It acted on a, I’m pretty quite sure it was the same under every single prime minister of this country that they come and they bundle these bills without giving the Belizean people the benefit of the doubt to really clearly study these things. And it shows that these people are dangerous. We have been electing some very dangerous politicians over the last 20 years. And at some point in time, I’m saying to you, the chicken will come home to roost.”
A Senate sitting is yet to be announced for a final review of the supplementals in addition to other bills and loan motions.
