Public Consultation Planned for Proposed Road Through Forest Reserve

A proposed access road through the Freshwater Creek Forest Reserve in the Orange Walk District will be the subject of a public consultation later this week.  According to the Department of the Environment, an Environmental Impact Assessment report has been submitted for the construction of a new route intended to connect the Honey Camp and Neuland communities.  The proposed road could improve access and movement between the two communities. However, because it would pass through a protected forest reserve, the project is also expected to raise questions about possible effects on wildlife, vegetation, water resources and the wider environment.  The consultation will give residents, environmental organizations and other stakeholders an opportunity to review the proposal, raise concerns and comment on the findings of the Environmental Impact Assessment before a decision is made.  The hybrid consultation is scheduled for Thursday at six o’clock in the evening at the San Estevan Lions Club in San Estevan Village.  Those unable to attend in person may participate via Zoom or follow the proceedings on the Government of Belize Press Office Facebook page.  The Department of the Environment is encouraging interested persons to take part and share their views on both the potential benefits and environmental implications of the proposed access road.
