Public to Weigh In on Undersea Fibre-Optic Cable Project

Belizeans are being invited to give their views on a proposed undersea fibre-optic cable that would cross Belize’s territorial waters and part of the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve.  The Department of the Environment will hold a public consultation next Thursday, October 15, at six p.m. at the Punta Gorda Sports Complex. The project, proposed by Trans Americas Fiber System, would connect Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. The cable would pass through Belize’s waters but would not land in the country.  An Environmental Impact Assessment has been submitted, outlining the proposal and its potential environmental and social impacts. The National Environmental Appraisal Committee will review the report before the Department of the Environment makes a final decision.  At Thursday’s consultation, residents can ask questions, seek clarification and share concerns or recommendations. Virtual participation will also be available, with an access link to be posted closer to the date on the department’s website and Facebook page. The meeting will be streamed live on the Government of Belize Press Office Facebook page.  The assessment is available on the department’s website and at designated locations in Punta Gorda, Placencia, Hopkins, Dangriga, Belize City, San Pedro and Caye Caulker. It includes an executive summary and a non-technical summary explaining the project.  Written comments must be submitted by October 21.
