PUC launches public consultation on new electrical safety regulations

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is asking the public to share their views on a new set of rules being proposed to improve electrical safety across Belize.  In a public notice issued earlier today, the Commission announced a consultation on the proposed Electricity (Electrical Design Compliance and Inspection) Regulations, 2026. These new rules are meant to put into law the process already used to review and inspect electrical designs before electrical systems are installed.  The Commission says the goal is to make sure electrical work across the country meets clear safety standards. This is meant to help prevent accidents, injuries, or damage to property that can happen when electrical systems are not installed properly.  The proposed rules will cover things such as the standards electrical designs must meet, how applications for electrical design approvals are submitted, how those designs are reviewed, and when licenses are required for certain electrical work or power-generating installations. The regulations will also include penalties for those who fail to follow the rules.  The Commission is encouraging businesses, contractors, electricians, engineers, developers, and members of the public to review the proposals and share their feedback.  Anyone wishing to comment has until April 10 at 5:00 p.m. to send their written responses to the Commission by email.  According to PUC, this is geared at modernizing regulatory oversight of the electricity sector and ensure that electrical infrastructure and installations across Belize meet clear safety and compliance standards.
