The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is assuring Belizeans that no final regulatory decision has been made on BTL’s proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications Limited. In a release issued today, the PUC reaffirmed that it will follow the applicable laws, regulations and established procedures when reviewing the proposed transaction. The Commission says it recognizes the significant public interest in the matter and the concerns being expressed by stakeholders. The PUC’s review will consider consumer protection, the continuity and quality of telecommunications services, transitional arrangements, market transparency and fairness. The Commission stressed that it is legally obligated to remain impartial and, for that reason, cannot comment on the ongoing public debate or indicate what its eventual decision may be. The formal regulatory decision, once issued, will represent the PUC’s official position. It is noteworthy, however, that an existing regulatory policy prevents BTL from increasing its approved rates before December 2028. The PUC says it will approach the matter with fairness and due diligence, ensuring that the interests of consumers, the telecommunications sector and the country are carefully considered before any decision is made.
