Hundreds of PUP supporters from across the country arrived in Belize City on Saturday morning for the party’s National Party Council meeting at Memorial Park. The gathering began just after ten o’clock and celebrates the People’s United Party’s seventy-sixth anniversary. PUP Party Chairman Henry Charles Usher spoke with Love News about the milestone and its significance for the PUP.

Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service: “At every anniversary, at every birthday celebration, it’s an opportunity for the National Executive of the party to review the work that we’ve done over the past year to make sure that we continue to live up to the philosophy, the constitution of the People’s United Party, and of course to celebrate with our people. Today is a celebration, yes it’s our National Party Council, but we’re also celebrating our 76th birthday as a party. It started September 20, 1950 and we continue to do the work as set out by our founding members.”
The PUP was founded on September 29, 1950, growing out of the People’s Committee and protests against the colonial government’s devaluation of the British Honduras dollar. That movement developed into a wider campaign for workers’ rights, national unity and independence. Under George Price’s leadership, the PUP helped lead the country through self-government and the movement toward independence
