With his recent appointment as Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise, Oscar Mira now steps into one of the most high-pressure portfolios in the Government of Belize, a ministry sitting at the center of national security, public safety, and economic enforcement. But as the nation grapples with reports of cartel activity in the north, tensions surrounding the trade war in the Corozal Free Zone, and the unresolved questions tied to the taking of Joseph Budna, one concern surfaced almost immediately was the personal safety of the new minister himself. Earlier this week, questions were raised about whether Minister Mira would accept a security detail as he moves through his duties, especially given the evolving security landscape and the risks that come with overseeing Belize’s policing apparatus. Speaking to Love News, Minister Mira acknowledged the concerns but offered a measured response when asked whether he would accept the offer of personal security.

Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise: “I move a wrong bell upon with my driver and one more person. And I have been doing that for the past four years and that’s what I’ll continue to do. I don’t see….. I do take my security very, very seriously don’t get me wrong. If I see that there’s a need for additional security, as I always emphasize and advise my colleagues, we don’t take things for granted. But for now, I’m okay with my driver and my aid that I move around with.”
