Reconstruction of Rio Hondo International Bridge Officially Underway

Reconstruction work on the Rio Hondo International Bridge officially began yesterday, marking the start of a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening tourism and cross-border trade between Belize and Mexico.  The bridge links northern Belize with the Mexican border region near Chetumal, a popular destination for Belizean shoppers and travelers. Mexican authorities say the six-month rehabilitation project is being led by the federal government.  The 62-year-old bridge has operated with only a single lane for several years after the second lane was closed due to structural cracks and deterioration. The reconstruction effort will address those safety concerns and restore full use of the crossing.  Repairs are expected to include upgrades to guardrails, parapets, sidewalks, deck slabs, pedestrian walkways, metal structures, pilings, access walls, and the installation of new signage.  The Rio Hondo Bridge is one of two crossings connecting Belize and Mexico along the river border. The other, the Chac-Temal International Bridge, will temporarily handle immigration services for Belizeans seeking Regional Visitor Cards during the reconstruction period. These permits allow Belizean travelers to enter Mexico for up to seven days for tourism or transit.  Authorities say Belize will also launch an information campaign to inform citizens that immigration services for the Regional Visitor Card will now be processed at the Chac-Temal crossing while construction continues on the Rio Hondo Bridge.  Officials expect that once the project is completed later this year, the improved crossing will help facilitate smoother travel and enhance economic ties between Belize and Mexico’s southern border region.
