Cavalier rebounded from their defeat to Portmore last week with an effortless 3-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Spanish Town Police, thanks to an Adrian Reid Jr brace (48th and 79th) in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium yesterday.
Christopher Ainsworth (52nd) got the other goal, as Cavalier remained in the top six on 13 points, while Spanish Town Police tasted their seventh defeat in nine matches and sit at the foot of the table on two points.
Reid, who has been suffering from injuries and poor form, was pleased with his display and contribution on the day, and believes he is close to his best again.
“It’s definitely a great feeling getting on the score sheet and helping the team carry home three points. Personally, I haven’t been at my best, and (I am) just working hard to try and get there,” Reid stated.
Cavalier assistant coach David Laylor said the out-of-favour national midfielder rediscovering his best form is encouraging for them.
“It’s a long time I haven’t seen Adrian Reid like this. I think we have found back Adrian Reid again, and I think he has found himself. He came into his own and was excellent.
“Adrian, like many players, go through phases. He went through his bad patch. He went through that phase that he needed to come out of and work his way back, and for us we will benefit from an (in-form) Adrian Reid,” he commented.
Top-class save
Spanish Town Police gave as good as they got in the first half, as both team had chances to score, the best of which fell to Cavalier’s Daryl Massicot in the closing stages of the first half, but Glenroy Samuels produced a top-class save to keep the forward off the score sheet.
Spanish Town had a chance of their own moments later, but Omar Brown’s header offered no trouble for Demelcio Fer in goal for Cavalier.
Cavalier went ahead three minutes in the second half after Samuels denied a shot on goal, but the rebound fell kindly to Reid, who fired past Samuels inside the near post.
Cavalier added a second from the penalty spot four minutes later when Romarion Thomas was fouled inside the area, and Ainsworth wrong-footed Samuels to put his team 2-0 up.
Jordan Elleston had a good chance to get a goal back for Police, but his shot was deflected over for a corner.
Reid sealed the win 11 minutes from the end when he beat Samuels with a scorching shot from 25 yards out that bamboozled Samuels before finding the net.
“It was pure instinct,” Reid added. “I was on top of the box and it came to me and I had a good feeling, and I had a try and it worked out perfect.”
Spanish Town Police assistant coach William Spencer said they have failed to carry their first-half performances into the second half over recent games.
“Unfortunately, that has been the trend for the last four games. We are playing well in the first 45 minutes but not turning up for the second 45.
“We are trying, but I think it is more mental than anything else. It is rough up here in the big league, very rough. We are learning, and we hope it doesn’t take too long to get moving” he said.
