Renovation works are now under way at the Negril Post Office in Westmoreland as the Post and Telecommunications Department moves to restore and modernise the facility.
Senior Director of Corporate Services at the Department, Carol Saunders Hammond, told JIS News that rehabilitation activities started on February 18 and are projected to be completed within three to six months.
She noted that the initiative forms part of the Department’s continued commitment to ensuring accessible, available and affordable postal services to Negril residents.
The Negril Post Office was closed in July 2024 following a structural assessment that revealed progressive deterioration of the building.
Although there were no confirmed reports of injuries prior to the closure, the Department took the precautionary decision to suspend operations to safeguard staff and customers.
“The commencement of renovation works follows the completion of the required technical assessments, regulatory approvals and inter-agency coordination to ensure full compliance with planning requirements, safety standards and procurement regulations,” Mrs. Saunders Hammond said.
The scope of works includes roof replacement and structural reinforcement, masonry repairs, electrical and plumbing upgrades, window and door replacements, enhanced security features, interior tiling, improvements to the customer-service areas and the relocation of private letterboxes on site.
The upgraded facility is expected to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen safety measures and improve overall service delivery.
To ensure continuity of service, operations were initially transferred to the Little London and Sheffield Post Offices and were later relocated on September 12, 2025, to a temporary location at the Marine Park Facility in Negril.
“This temporary arrangement ensures that our customers continue to receive the full suite of services in a safe and accessible environment. Operations will remain at the Marine Park location until the renovation of the Negril Post Office is completed, after which services will seamlessly transition to the upgraded facility,” she said.
Upon completion, the modernised Negril Post Office will accommodate an expanded range of services, including pension encashment and PATH disbursement, bill payment solutions, Klick N Ship online shipping, Zip Mail next-day courier service, Fast Track express mail, registered mail and parcel services, as well as free customer access Wi-Fi.
Mrs. Saunders Hammond also expressed appreciation to residents of Negril for their patience and cooperation.
She said further updates will be provided at key milestones as the project progresses.
