Repeat Offender Gets 8 Years for Burglary Caught on Camera

A known repeat offender, 47-year-old Denfield Lemott, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of burglarizing the home of Cornell Brown in March 2024. Surveillance footage captured Lemott entering the Brown’s residence at Mile 5 on the Philip Goldson Highway, rummaging through drawers, and stealing $2,520 in jewelry and cash. Police later recovered one of the stolen items, a Brazilian gold chain, at Lemott’s home. Despite denying involvement and claiming he didn’t know how the stolen item ended up at his house, the court rejected his explanation. The magistrate noted Lemott’s clear presence in the video, citing his height, body type, and gait, even though he attempted to conceal his face. She described his actions as calculated and deliberate. Lemott, who has a criminal record dating back to 1996, was previously convicted of four burglaries, robbery, theft, and handling stolen goods. Although he had no convictions from 2014 to 2024, the magistrate found his past offenses and the impact on the victim’s warranted a harsher sentence. Brown testified that his wife no longer felt safe at home alone following the break-in. The eight-year sentence was reduced by 9 months and 24 days of remand time, leaving Lemott with 7 years, 2 months, and 8 days to serve. The magistrate denied any additional sentence reduction, citing his refusal to plead guilty despite evidence.
