Repeat Offender Remanded Over Alleged Gang Hand Sign in Photo

Tashane Williams, a twenty-four-year-old Southside resident, was remanded to prison after being charged with promoting a gang-related activity. Williams, who was unrepresented, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court and was read a single charge. The charge alleges that Williams was seen in photos displaying a gang hand sign, “PIV,” which stands for “Peace in the Village.” Before entering a plea, Williams asked the magistrate if a guilty plea would result in a fine. The magistrate explained that the offense could result in both a fine of up to $20,000 and jail time. Upon hearing this, Williams pleaded not guilty. Under the Crimes Control Criminal & Justice Act, the magistrate was unable to grant bail, and Williams was remanded to Belize Central Prison until his next court date on September 15. He can, however, apply for bail at the High Court. Williams is known to the courts as back in May he was granted bail for a separate firearm and ammunition offense and was also out on bail for the rape of a child.
