Kaori Robley of the Kaizen Panthers copped the gold medal in the Women’s 100-metres hurdles final on the opening day of the National Association of Athletic Administration of T&T (NAAATT) National Gas Company (NGC) Senior Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo yesterday.

Contesting a two-woman field in the final, Robley cruised to a 1.5 wind-assisted 14.71-second win over McKailah Warde of the Neon Wolves, 14.75 seconds. Her triumph was among the early results on the track, as fans had to wait until 7:10 pm last night for the start of most of the track’s finals.

Also coming in the late afternoon, Lalenii Grant pocketed the women’s discus crown by heaving the discus a distance of 52.40 metres for her club, Mercury. Her winning throw came at his fifth and last attempt and proved better than Shakera Kirk’s 49.02-meter throw for the Kaizen Panthers that earned her the silver medal. Adriana Quamina secured the bronze medal with her 44.06 metres, representing D’Abadie.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Romany produced a time of three minutes, 50.67 seconds to prove himself as the national champion in the 1500-metre race amid a challenging field. The T&T Road Runners Club athlete beat back his namesake, Nicholas Landeau of Club Pace and Perf, whose time of 3:59.94 was good enough for the runner-up silver medal, with Jahfa Woodley sealing the bronze medal in 4:02.07 running for the Memphis Pioneers.

Later, Shian Lewis of Pace and Perf benefited from a strong start to stop the clock at 55.94 seconds in the final of the women’s 400-metre. She turned back an expected first-place finish from Kayla Charles, who entered the final with the fastest time from the preliminaries.

But in the race filled with runners with the capability to dip under the 55-second barrier, Charles of the Abilene Wildcats had to settle for the silver medal with her time of 55.96, with Hannah Reid (Phoenix Athletics) taking the bronze medal in 56.01.

In the 400 metres for international men, Zimbabwe’s Takudzwa Chiyangwa swept past the Barbados pair of Kyle Gale and Desean Boyce for the gold medal. The Zimbabwean cruised to a decent time of 45.66 seconds, which took him home comfortably ahead of Gale, who took the runner-up silver medal in 46.42 seconds, while his compatriot Boyce crossed the line in third in 47.36 seconds.

The 400-metre dash for local runners saw Jaden Marchan taking the gold medal for Siparia Athletic in 46.33 seconds. He beat back Shakeem McKay of the Abilene Wildcats (46.62) and third was Keone John (Memphis Pioneers AC) at 46.74.
