A new chapter in reggae’s evolution is unfolding as Runkus gears up to release SUPERNOVA, a genre-blending project that fuses roots reggae, dancehall, and experimental soundscapes. The forthcoming album, featuring contributions from Sean Paul and the iconic voice of Peter Tosh, positions Runkus as one of the most forward-thinking creatives in modern Jamaican music, bridging generations while redefining sonic boundaries.
Known for his avant-garde approach, Runkus has spent the past decade building a multi-dimensional career as an artist, producer, and composer. His résumé includes a MOBO Award for his work on Being Poor Is Expensive, alongside nominations for Grammy, Juno, and Ivor Novello honours. However, SUPERNOVA signals a deeper artistic pivot. Drawing inspiration from collaborations that merged music and visual art, he recently linked with Bahamian artist Tavares Strachan, a MacArthur Genius Prize recipient, to craft a project that exists beyond traditional audio formats.
The album’s concept dives into transformation and duality. Themes of life and death, identity, and rebirth are layered over heavy basslines, roots-driven instrumentation, and dancehall energy. It’s a deliberate fusion that echoes the legacy of Jamaican greats while pushing into uncharted territory. The inclusion of Peter Tosh’s voice adds historical weight, while Sean Paul’s presence injects global dancehall appeal, creating a dynamic interplay between past and present.
With SUPERNOVA now available for pre-order on vinyl and digital platforms, anticipation continues to build among reggae and dancehall audiences worldwide. As the project edges closer to release, Runkus is not just delivering an album, but making a statement about the future of Caribbean music.
