Twenty-five-year-old Rupert Codd has been found guilty of raping a woman outside the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Justice Derick F. Sylvester handed down the verdict this morning in the High Court, rejecting Codd’s account and finding the woman’s testimony credible and reliable. The court heard that the woman had walked to the hospital to seek medical attention because she was feeling unwell. Around three a.m. on April 2, 2023, Codd followed her, physically assaulted her and dragged her onto a picnic table, where he raped her. Codd denied the rape. He claimed that the woman had stolen his wallet and phone while he was urinating behind a building. He admitted grabbing her and taking her back to the table but denied having sex with her. Justice Sylvester rejected that explanation, finding that Codd had fabricated the story. Codd remains on remand and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 9. Before sentencing, the judge will hear mitigation on his behalf and review a social inquiry report, a victim impact statement, his criminal history and a prison report.
