Saints host St Benedict’s in key SSFL Premier clash

9 hours ago 5

With its lead now trimmed to two points due to a disciplinary ruling in favour of Signal Hill Secondary, leader St Mary’s College will face a stern test to hold on to top spot in the 17-team Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Boys Premier Division when it hosts St Benedict’s College at Serpentine Road in St Clair, Port-of-Spain.

Going into Wednesday’s Round 13 matches, the Cornell Glen-coached St Mary’s, the lone remaining unbeaten team in the league, sit atop the table with 30 points from 12 matches, two ahead of Signal Hill Secondary with defending champions Naparima College, St Benedict’s College and Fatima College, next with 25 points each, and Presentation College of San Fernando, sixth with 21.

This after the SSFL Disciplinary Committee awarded Signal Hill a 3-0 win over Trinity College of Moka for their October 10 fixture at Trinity College Ground in Moka, Maraval, which was not played after referee Timothy Derry declared the field unfit for play due to poor field markings, which were caused by a heavy downpour of rain a few hours earlier on the said date.

However, there could still be a twist in the matter as Trinity College is expected to appeal.

Today, the focus will be on Serpentine Road, where the ‘Saints’, coming off a dogged 2-0 road win against Arima North Secondary, welcome St Benedict’s College, which dropped two valuable points in their last outing, a 1-1 draw with southern rivals Presentation College.

With remaining fixtures against lowly duo Trinity College of Moka and San Juan North Secondary as well as a Round 16 encounter with Signal Hill, a win today for the ‘Saints’ over St Benedict’s will make them firm favourites to end a title drought of more than eight years, when they defeated St Anthony’s College 1-0 in the 2018 Coca Cola North Zone Intercol final on a strike from current T&T and Orlando City winger Tyrese Spicer.

Prior to that, St Mary’s College’s last major national top-flight football title was the National League championship in 1991, when they defeated Queen’s Royal College (QRC) 2-1.

However, a defeat or drawn result today will leave the door open for Signal Hill to go top of the standings with a win in their home encounter with Arima North at the Bertille St Clair Playing Field at Signal Hill Secondary in Tobago.

Down South, Naparima will also be keen to pick up full points when they entertain QRC at their Lewis Street Ground in San Fernando, while Presentation College will have a chance to close the gap on idle Fatima when it travels to face Malick Secondary at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Training Field, Mucurapo.

At the other end of the table in clashes with relegation implications, cellar-place Trinity College East travels to second from bottom Mucurapo West, with both teams desperate for points in an attempt to avoid the drop at the end of the season, while third from bottom St Augustine Secondary faces St Anthony’s, with four points separating both teams.

Also on today, San Juan North, one point above the drop zone, meets Hillview College at its San Juan North Secondary School ground in Bourg Mulatresse, while Speyside Secondary plays at home against Trinity College Moka at Speyside Recreation Ground.
