Residents of San Marcos Village in the Toledo District staged a peaceful protest this weekend over what they say is the unauthorized clearing of land they consider part of their communal territory. Villagers gathered in the community to voice concern after portions of land were reportedly being cleared under claims that the property is privately owned. Protesters maintain that the area forms part of their traditional communal lands and are calling for clarity and intervention from the relevant authorities. The demonstration remained orderly, with residents emphasizing that their goal is to protect what they believe are their customary land rights while seeking dialogue with officials. Senior Correspondent Paul Mahung was on the ground in San Marcos and filed the following report which includes an interview with the private land owner Papa Pena.
Villagers say they are prepared to continue advocating for recognition of their communal land claims as discussions on the matter are expected to continue.
